Merseyside escaped the worst of the heavy rain Hurricane Nigel deposited on nearby North Wales and Greater Manchester last week but there will be no escape from Storm Agnes when it arrives in the UK in the coming days.

After a sunny start to the working week, showers are due to hit the region on Tuesday and the Met Office have issued a yellow weather alert for Wednesday and Thursday, when high winds are expected to buffet Liverpool and the surrounding areas.

The weather alert is currently in place from 10am on Wednesday until 7am on Thursday. Severe gales, potentially reaching up to 80mph in coastal regions, and heavy rain is forecast.

Mark Sidaway, deputy chief meteorologist at the Met Office, told Sky News: “A deep area of low pressure is expected to approach southwest Ireland early on Wednesday, and track across northern parts of the UK before clearing early Thursday.

“There is some uncertainty on the precise track and strength of this weather system, however the most likely outcome at present is for a wide swathe of 50 to 60mph gusts affecting inland areas. Some Irish Sea coasts could see gusts of 65 to 75mph, with a small chance of 80mph gusts on the most exposed coasts and headlands.”
