Liverpool's Queens Drive to reopen following flood water tragedy

A major Liverpool road, which has been closed since August, could reopen soon following the installation of new safety measures.

Elaine and Philip Marco tragically lost their lives on August 26, after their car became trapped in flood water on Queens Drive.

The busy Mossley Hill road, which is prone to flooding, has since remained closed to motorists whilst investigative and reparative works took place.

New flood sensors, signage and barriers have now been installed, as well as the installation of modern gullies and repairs to the carriageway and footway.

Now, Liverpool Council are preparing to reopen Queens Drive, with testing of the new safety equipment taking place today (January 23).

The local authority says the new sensors will measure water levels and 'provide long term data which will show how quickly or slowly water is getting through' as well as aiding future maintenance works.

Two barriers, which have been installed one before after the Queens Drive bridges, will also be tested, and if all is in working order, the primary sensors on the bridge will trigger them to come down and illuminate the 'Road Liable to Flood' signs at either end.

Liverpool Council says that after analysing the results of the tests, it will be 'in a position to determine a date for the road to be reopened'.
