Beatles drummer Ringo Starr immortalised The Empress pub in Toxteth when he featured his old local on the cover of his first solo album.

And now the pub has returned the favour.

A giant mural of the legendary musician has been revealed on the side of the venue, which towers from the pavement to the roof.

Liverpool artist John Culshaw painted the colourful artwork on the side of the Admiral Street public house, which stands across the road from the childhood home of Ringo on Admiral Grove.

The former Beatles’ mum, Elsie, is believed to have worked in the pub and Ringo acknowledged the venue on the cover of his album Sentimental Journey.

Artist Culshaw has painted many murals around Liverpool, including famous football icons from the area.

Last year he painted a mural of boxer Tyson Fury mid-bout on a wall in the boxer’s gym.
