Local lad Les Jones rose to the challenge of succeeding ace South African winger Tom Van Vollenhoven at Saints - scoring 284 tries in 492 games between 1967-­81.

Jones won Wembley medals in 1972­ and 76 - scoring in the first clash with Leeds - and Championship gongs in 1970 and 71.

He played for both Lancashire and Great Britain and still lives in St Helens with his wife Shirley.
