GARY Wheeler made his long-awaited return to action when he helped the Reserves to a 34-10 home victory over Hull FC on Saturday.

Wheeler, who is equally at home on the wing or in the centre, had not played any competitive rugby since the Wigan-Saints derby on Good Friday, and a subsequent shoulder operation.

But it was Danny Brotherton who stole the limelight, scoring a hat-trick as Saints notched their seventh win of the campaign.

Other tries came from Anthony Walker, Matty Ashurst and Alex Trumper, with Tommy Johnson landing five goals.

The Academy outfit made it a double when they travelled to Humberside on the same day, and defeated the young Airlie Birds 22-18.

n LEE Gaskell has been nominated on a short-list for this season’s Albert Goldthorpe Rookie of the Year Medal. The 20-year-old stand-off has been a regular first team choice since early March – stepping in for the injuried Leon Pryce for nearly five months – and producing some outstanding performances.

The winner will be announced on Wednesday, September 13.
