WHILE Alex Walmsley can cap a whirlwind season with a second straight Grand Final appearance, he is looking forward to another honour a week early.
The impressive prop has already earned a place in this year’s Super League Dream Team to go with being shortlisted for the Steve Prescott Man of Steel – and is widely tipped to add England
Jamie Peacock - you look for those names on the team sheet before the game because you know how much of a battle it’s going to beAlex Walmsley
honours to the list this autumn.
But the Dewsbury lad, who signed for Saints from Batley last season, still has to pinch himself when he runs out for Saints - and facing one opponent in the Leeds ranks on Friday represents another highlight.
“We’ve got a big challenge ahead of us but it’s a challenge we’re looking forward to,” he said.
“Jamie Peacock - you look for those names on the team sheet before the game because you know how much of a battle it’s going to be.
“He’s an unbelievable legend. To play against him is a massive honour for me.”
Despite holding Peacock, who earned an 11th Dream Team appearance when
this year’s line-up was announced this week, in such high regard, Walmsley insists it won’t distract him when Saints
and Leeds tussle on Friday night.
The winners will face either Wigan or Huddersfield in the Grand Final on October 10 - and having appeared as a sub in last year’s win over Wigan - Walmsley admits getting a taste for the Final only makes the players want it more.
“It certainly tests you as a middle man - it’s great to go on a field with Peacock,” added Walmsley. “He gets the aura from the way he plays.
“(Getting to the Final is) addictive and we just want to get back there again.
“There’s not much motivation needed this week.”
Fans will also get to see the two other contenders for this year’s Steve Prescott Man of Steel in action at Headingley on Friday.
Leeds’ Zak Hardaker and Adam Cuthbertson are also shortlisted for the award, with the winner being announced next Monday, October 5.
