ST Helens-based cyclist Ed Clancy (above) was unable to defend his omnium world title after he was struck down with a virus.

Ed Clancy MBE, 26, who was part of last week’s British bronze medal-winning team pursuit squad, had to pull out of the gruelling five-race event at the weekend’s track cycling World Championships in Holland.

The Olympic gold medal winner, who lives in Newton-le-Willows, had caused a shock by taking the omnium title at his first attempt in 2010.

But, disappointingly, he had to pull out at the last minute at the weekend because of an unspecified virus.

His omnium place was taken by international newcomer 18-year-old Sam Harrison.
