SAINTS are refusing to play down reports that Paul Sculthorpe may join bitter rivals Wigan as an assistant coach.
A club spokesman declined to comment, while Sculthorpe himself was unavailable to comment.
And the silence will only heighten the speculation that the St Helens legend – who lives in Orrell – could become Shaun Wane’s No.2 at the DW Stadioum once he is promoted to head coach.
But any development is unlikely until Wane’s own future is resolved. The current assistant coach remains favourite to succeed Souths-bound Michael Maguire, but a deal is not yet been done.
Wigan chairman Ian Lenagan was still in France yesterday and was unaware of the Sculthorpe reports. “I don’t comment on speculation,” he said.
Sculthorpe, who has a business role with Saints, did not return calls.
