As a yardstick to how Super League XX1 will unfold this pre-season friendly will count for little.
Saints' boss Keiron Cunningham may have expressed his disappointment at the outcome of Sunday's Karalius Cup clash with neighbours Widnes but quite rightly pointed out that the result was of little consequence.
Cunningham said: “I was disappointed, not about the result, but the say we went about things.
“We were a little bit soft at times after starting really and due to this we thought we were just on the training field for a game of touch rugby but you can't play our sport like that.
“It's a tough game and all about energy battles and we didn't win that part of the game.
“Widnes looked like they were a game ahead of us in the pre-season build-up but unfortunately we tried to chase victory in the wrong manner.
“It was for all intents and purposes a trial game, even though we have a lot to learn from it as far as I am concerned.”
No one can begrudge Widnes their well deserved win. They were the sharper outfit from almost start to finish and the way they ripped holes in the Saints' defence will set alarm bells ringing.
