Former Saints boss Nathan Brown is being heavily tipped to land the vacant Newcastle Knights job.

Brown left Langtree Park at the end of the last season after guiding the club to a famous Grand Final victory.

He has been out of work since then while he weights up a number of options in the NRL.

Newcastle Knights have been run by caretaker coach Danny Buderus since the sacking of Rick Stone in July.

Club chief executive Matt Gidley, the former Saints player, said: “The football committee has made the recommendation to the board that Nathan was the strongest candidate throughout the process.

“He was interviewed on two separate occasions and was a real stand-out.”

Brown spent six seasons in the NRL as head coach of St George Illawarra before heading to England for spells with Huddersfield and then St Helens.
