Not for the first time, the 23-year-old is expected to replace injured skipper James Roby in the starting line-up against the Huddersfield Giants at Emerald Headingley tonight (Friday).

Smith, who has been on Saints' books since his school days, said: ''If I can do half the job James does week-in and week- out, I won't go far wrong.

'''I'm also relishing the challenge against a physically strong Giants' team who are a threat all over the field. but we will treat them with the respect they deserve like any other opponents,''

Neither can the ball-playing hooker wait for his first full start since lockdown - having spent the last four games on the bench - and needs to get more game time under his belt as fixtures will come thick and fast in the not too distant future.

Smith said :''The game is much quicker since the introduction of the new rules and that suits my style but defensively it is more demanding on the body as players are making more tackles.and less breaks.''

Tonight's match, which will be screened live by Sky TV, kicks-off at 6pm. and victory for the defending champions will elevate them to pole position on point difference from Wigan Warriors, who were thumped 34-18 by bottom of the table Hull KR at Emerald Headingley last night (Thursday).
