'Our lads are just as hungry as ever' says Paul Wellens
Long-serving Paul Wellens will be setting his sights on helping his club and country achieve major milestones in a busier-than-usual Rugby League season, which gets under way in a matter of weeks.h.
The assistant coach of St Helens, who is also a member of the England backroom staff, will be targeting a hat-trick of Super League titles for his hometown club where he spent his entire playing career between 1998 and 2015 and playing a part, fingers crossed, in his country lifting the 2021 World Cup for the first time since 1972 when under the Great Britain banner.
But his thoughts at this moment in time will be totally focused on the Super League and helping boss Kristian Woolf and other members of the St Helens backroom staff licking the players into shape for the demanding months ahead.
Wellens, who made 495 appearances for Saints, said: ''Pre-season has been great and we are now getting to the stage where we pick up the intensity and introduce 13 v 13 games.
''It is important we get all the hard work done now because we face another tough season ahead."
He added: ''Despite our success over the last couple of years, the lads are just as hungry as ever to repeat the feat.
''Our new boys have also been fantastic (three of whom have come from overseas) and it can't have been easy in these difficult times.
''They haven't been able to get out and about to see our country due to the pandemic but they all come into training each day with a big smile on their faces.''
They'll have a bigger smile at the end of the season if silverware comes their way!
