Matty Lees facing long lay-off following ankle surgery
Only a few hours after Matty Lees had been named in the England Knights' squad, his St Helens head coach Kristian Woolf revealed that the 23-year-old would be sidelined for 10 to 11 weeks following minor ankle surgery.
“It is a big loss for us,'' said Woolf, who added: ''I had been really happy with how Matty started the season.
''I sang his praises on how hard he had worked on his body and how fit and physically prepared he was for the new campaign and thought he showed that during the first couple of rounds.
''It is unfortunate for us that he is going to be out for a period of time, but what I do know about Matty is that he is extremely diligent and he will come back soon and hit the ground running again.”
The strong running forward picked up his injury during the Betfred Challenge Cup third round victory against holders Leeds Rhinos at the Totally Wicked Stadium.
But there is some better news on fellow forward Morgan Knowles, who is still to feature in any match this year after close season surgery on one of his thumbs.
Woolf said: ''His thumb has now healed and he has returned to training with the squad ahead of joining in contact work in the coming weeks.
“He is certainly not too far away from playing again for us.”
