Greg Richards celebrates his 21st birthday next week but has already received the perfect gift ... his first try for Saints after 60 appearances
The Cumbrian, who was snapped up by the club in 2011 and made his senior debut at Castleford on July 7, 2013, plunged over the whitewash in the first half of Sunday’s 44-32 victory over Wakefield Trinity Wildcats and was immediately mobbed by his team-mates.
“It had been a long time coming for the kid but he deserved it after the hard work he puts in week after week,” said delighted head coach Keiron Cunningham.
Cunningham said: “You could tell by the support of the players around him what it mattered to all of them.
“Apart from the substitutes, everyone hugged and embraced him.”
Not only did the prop forward get a monkey off his back but produced an outstanding all-round performance in which he completed 21 tackles, made 76 metres and embarked on eight carries.
“Greg really played well,” said Cunningham.
“He was one of our stand-out front rowers. He was handed a rare start in the first 13 and gave us a good opening to the match with his early try.
“Let’s hope it is the first of many and turn up like buses - two or three at a time.”
