Weather halts Rainhill's charge for top spot

Rainhill lost ground in the early season race to establish top spot in the premier division of the Love Lane Liverpool Cricket Competition on Saturday - and couldn't do anything about it!

All matches at 1st and 2nd XI were called off without a ball being bowled due to rain, apart from the top section fixture between leaders Northern and Southport and Birkdale, which resulted in the Crosby outfit picking up 24 out of a possible 25 points following a 102 run victory.

The chasing pack had all to be content with five points each as per the rules when matches are abandoned.

It meant Northern moved onto 73 points, leaving Ormskirk and Rainhill trailing on 50 and New Brighton on 48 and cursing their luck over the state of the weather.

As a trustee of a former Liverpool Competition club, I've always felt, as a matter of fairness, that if the 1st and 2nd XI programme is decimated like last weekend all clubs should be awarded five points apiece.

There are others who may not share my opinion but it is certainly food for thought.

Rainhill are hoping to get back on track this Saturday when they entertain seventh-placed Leigh who are still seeking their first win.
