St Helens trio set for world darts championship

Michael Smith, who was beaten 7-3 by Dutchman Michael Van Gerwen in the final of the 2018/19 World Darts Championship, is one of the top four contenders this time round, according to the bookmakers.

The St Helens ace of the oche is quoted at odds of 14/1 win the event which gos underway last night (Tuesday) at the Alexandra Palace, London.

Favourite is three-times winner Van Gerwen (5/2) followed by Welshman Gerwyn Price (5/1)) and holder Peter Wright (6/1).

St Helens hopes are also pinned on Dave Chisnall (50/1) and Stephen Bunting (250/1) but their odds suggest they are rank outsiders..

None of the local trio are involved in the opening round and join the competition next week when they will know who their opponents will be.

Darts players from a record 29 countries are involved in the event which carries total prize money of £2,500 000 with the winner collecting £500.000 and the runner- up £200,000.

The competition,which runs until January 3, 2021, will be screened live by Sky with a short break over the holiday period.
