St Helens Town 2
St Helens Town advanced to the First Round Proper of the FA Vase with a Sunday afternoon victory over Northern Counties East League outfit Nostell Miners Welfare.
Town’s landlords Ashton Athletic had exited the competition on the same ground the day before to opposition from the same division as the hosts had an early scare when Rory Crowther had to be alert to make an excellent save with less than three minutes on the clock.
This was the Wakefield visitors’ only chance of the opening period and Town took the game to the Yorkshire outfit after this.
Bergqvist who was released by a well-weighted through ball fired shot at the keeper when he should have done better.
The real surprise was that it took the hosts so long to open the scoring.
The breakthrough came in the 45th minute of the contest when skipper Andy Gillespie found some space in the Nostell box and showed his killer instinct to power the ball home past the helpless Saynor.
The second half was a much more even affair but the visitors in all reality served very little notice of intent on the Town goal and Crowther will not have many quieter afternoon’s this season.
The result of the contest was put beyond doubt in the 76th minute when a Town foray forward culminated in an effort from Chad Whyte being blocked and the rebound was volleyed home by Bergqvist to send Town into the hat for the first round draw for the first time since 2012.
Town’s next game is Saturday at home to Squires Gate.
