THIS hard-fought victory secured home advantage for Liverpool St Helens in the winner takes all Northern division play-off next Saturday.
Not at their most fluent the Moss Laners did what they had to do and ran out winners by five tries to one in what was a watchable encounter.
Belying their lowly league position, Fleetwood put in a defiant performance and pushed LSH all the way.
The home side scored first through skipper Ryan Riches and it wasn’t until the 22nd minute that LSH responded through left winger Matt Cunliffe.
Stanley, Paul McLindon and skipper Jan Lourens scored in the second half to ease LSH to victory.
Fleetwood hit back through winger Zack Coultas while LSH were down to 13 men. Stung into action LSH reasserted just before the end with another fine try from Ian Stanley, cementing his position as Moss Lane’s leading try scorer for the third year in succession.
So, a hugely entertaining season is still not over. It’s the play-off revisited as, for the second year running, LSH take on rivals from the East for the prize of National League rugby.
