Former FA Vase winners St Helens Town’s tilt at the Vase last just 90 minutes as they turned in a poor performance exiting at Division One Pontefract Collieries.
Town had an early chance when Cole Ashton linked with Shaun Judge only to see his shot held by the home stopper.
The home team responded with eventual match-winner Steve Lyon having an effort tipped over the bar by Ryan Taylor before, on four minutes, Lyon was in the right place to turn the a centre from the right home.
Judge then drew a save from Craig Parry in the home goal before debutant Daniel Barber saw his header hit the post.
Lyon then added his and Pontefract’s second when a long ball was allowed to bounce and the former Doncaster Rovers player took advantage of the hesitance in the Town back line.
The second half saw Town come at their hosts in the opening quarter of an hour but without creating any clear cut chances.
Matters then got worse when Town stopper Taylor was sent off in added on time for a second yellow card and the 1987 winners slipped out of the competition. But Town will be looking to bounce back at AFC Liverpool today.
