Mighty Michael Smith demolished Peter ‘Snakebite’ Wright to keep hot on the heels of world number one Michael van Gerwen in the Unibet Premier Darts League.
Smith romped to a 7-1 victory over the Scotland international in Nottingham and more than made amends for the previous week’s loss - his first in the competition - the hands of world champion Rob Cross.
‘Bully Boy’ took full advantage of an out-of-sort Wright and only trails Van Gerwen at the top of the table on legs difference with both players on 10 points.
Smith said: “I had started the competition with four straight wins but then threw it away against Rob last week.
“I was determined to get back on the horse and I have done that. I started the game OK but I knew Peter was struggling to find any form and was able to take full advantage.
“I didn’t perform as well as I wanted but I picked up both points and that is the most important thing.
“I keep hitting doubles and getting the points while also focusing on ensuring I don’t get eliminated. This is another two points towards that goal so I’m pretty happy.”
The St Helens ace of the oche insisted that he still had more petrol in the tank and that will be a worry for his rivals which was clearly demonstrated when he won six of his seven legs against Wright on his favourite double 20.
Next Thursday he faces arguably his toughest test of the tournament when he goes toe-to-toe with Van Gerwen in a battle of the top two in Glasgow.
