Dave Chisnall is left to fly the St Helens flag in the BetVictor World Matchplay Darts Championship at the Winter Gardens, Blackpool.

He faces red-hot Dutch favourite Michael van Gerwen in the quarter finals of the tournament tonight (Thursday).

It follows the demise of both Michael Smith and Stephen Bunting in Wednesday night’s second round matches.

Former World Youth champion Smith crashed to a 13-6 defeat at the hands of the legendary Phil Taylor, who also hit a nine-darter during

an eight-leg blitz, while Lakeside champion Bunting suffered a 13-8 setback against Scotland’s Gary Anderson.

Both local lads gave it their best shots but arguably Taylor and Anderson produced their best performances of the championship to date and deservedly progressed to tonight’s next stage of the tournament.
