ST Helens duo Paul Sculthorpe and Louie McCarthy-Scarsbrook enjoyed differing fortunes when they competed in a prizefighter-style boxing tournament.
McCarthy-Scarsbrook dominated for most of his fight against Salford’s Lee Jewitt, but was dropped to the canvas in the closing moments by a sweet right.
Scully, the former Saints skipper and now the club’s new business manager, fared better, making short work of his former Great Britain teammate Dale Laughton.
The double man-of-steel winner then secured a close points semi-final victory over veteran Stanley Gene, with Scully using his considerable height and reach advantage to good affect.
A thrilling final went to organiser and former Hull FC star Lee Radford.
He arranged the contest as part of his testimonial year and to help raise much needed funds for children’s charity Life for a Kid.
