Rainford’s decision to bring their innings to a close when standing at 243-5 after 55 overs couldn’t really be questioned - but hopes of picking up maximum points from Saturday’s ECB Liverpool Competition Premier division home fixture against Lytham were dashed at the end of a run feast.

Opener Paul Farrar set the tone of the home side’s innings with a rock solid 88 and was given more than adequate support by Comrey Edgeworth (48) and Dave Snellgrove (47 n.o.).

It was a challenging target for the Seasiders but thanks to steady batting right down the order they achieved their goal - eight batsmen reaching double figures as they raced to a match-clinching 246-8 from 57.1 overs.

John Dotters (4-83), Daniel Houghton (3-45) and Finlo Smith (1-36) claimed the Rainford wickets.

Neighbours Rainhill were presented with a similar situation when they travelled to nearby Leigh. They, too, batted first and then declared their innings closed at 228-8 from 55 overs (Mike Rotheram 45, James Clarke 39, Ross Higham 34 and Phil Veacock 33 n.o.).

But, unlike Rainford, they managed to earn a draw - restricting the home side to 170-8 and collecting nine points in the process.

The wickets were shared by Akshay Arum Darekar (5-58), David Atkinson (2-26) and Ryan Williams (1-47).

In the first division, Newton-le-Willows went down by 12 runs against Fleetwood Hesketh at Sea Cop.

The Southport side, batting first, posted a total of 202 all out (Dominic Chambers 3-38, Ben Walkden 2-39, Nathan Hughes 3-31, Thomas Gunshorn 2-33) and despite an unbeaten 73 from Gunshorn, Newton-le-Willows were dismissed for 190.

Sutton maintained third spot in division two with a comprehensive away win at Spring View. Batting first, they amassed 243-9 dec from 60 overs with Jamie Greener (59), Jack York (55) and Joe Smith (40) all prominent at the crease.

In reply, the Wigan outfit were rolled over for 143 - Smith returning impressive figures of 7-23.

Mike Walkden achieved a personal milestone for Newton-le-Willows 2nd X1, hammering 105 not out in a runaway win over Rainford 2nd X1. Alex Lyon weighed-in with 59 and Daniel Duxbury blasted an unbeaten 64, sharing an unbroken stand of 176 with Walkden.

The target proved beyond Rainford’s reach and they were ousted for 177.
