Liverpool St Helens 19

LEADERS Sandbach defeated Liverpool St Helens in an incident packed and bad tempered North One West clash.

Playing with their usual maximum effort LSH were undone by giving away too many penalties, as well as being on the receiving end of some critical decisions.

Sandbach opened the scoring with a penalty followed by a try from Gareth Caen. midway through the half Simon Verbickas crashed over to make it 15-0.

LSH hit back immediately with a well executed catch and drive finished off by number eight Phil Kearns.

Another home side penalty was followed by a try from Dave Cunliffe after an outstanding break from Ally Sutherland, converted by Matt Cunliffe.

The restart was, however, followed by a sustained 30 man brawl ending with two players from each side sent to the sin bin, followed by another Sandbach penalty to close the first half at 21-12.

In the second half LSH were denied an early try when the referee ruled that the ball had been held up over the line.

Sandbach winger James Beal ran in a try followed by a second from Caen to extend their lead before Alex McClurg darted over for LSH’s third.

In the dying minutes another melee saw Dave Cunliffe red carded. Verbickas scored again on the final whistle.

This Saturday Rochdale are the visitors to Moss Lane. Kick off is 2.15pm.
