West Park 21 Glossop 20
WEST Park were involved in yet another cliffhanger – however, this time, they snatched a narrow victory with a try in injury time.
Park were well aware of the power of the Glossop pack, having lost a forward battle in the away fixture in October.
Saturday’s game at Red Rocks followed the same pattern, with Glossop launching wave after wave of forward drives until eventually crossing between the posts, a try which inexplicably went unconverted.
The home side’s back division had been forced to reorganise as centre Matt Cozens had signed for Sale FC.
Nonetheless, they realised that keeping the ball in the back division was preferable to engaging in a forward battle, and a well-worked try by prop John Gorst came after some fine wing play from Andy Harvey.
Another scrum close to the try-line was then used to good effect by the big Glossop pack, with a pushover try by the visitors’ No.8 Dan Clark seeming inevitable.
Park’s blossoming winger Harvey was then involved again in good back play, bringing a try from full-back Ben Robinson to produce a 10-10 interval scoreline, as neither teams’ kicker was able to master the windy conditions.
The home side took the lead early in the second half with a penalty by Warren Hunt, but then lost Jon Gorst to the sin-bin for an alleged tip-up tackle.
The visitors took full advantage of their extra numbers in the pack to register another pushover try.
The referee then showed another yellow card, this time to the visitors’ prop Dave Short, with Hunt popping over the resulting penalty for a 16-15 Park lead.
With only minutes to go, a scrambled try scored in a melee on the Park line put Glossop back in front at 20-16, with Hunt receiving a red card for disputing the try.
But then came the last-gasp try to bring Park victory.
Park have a blank Saturday this weekend due to Raging Bull Cup week.
They return to action on Saturday, March 3 at Ashton on Mersey (kick-off 3pm).
