Lance Hohaia has announced his shock retirement from rugby league.
The Saints utility back, a World Cup winner with New Zealand, informed the club this week he wanted to quit the game with immediate affect.
Hohaia, 31, told the Reporter earlier this month he was considering retiring but indicated no decision would be made until the end of the season.
Saints declined to comment on the reason behind Hohaia’s sudden departure.
Hohaia has played a supporting role for Saints this season, often missing out on a spot in Keiron Cunningham’s first team.
A club spokesman said: “Lance Hohaia has informed us of his retirement from rugby league and will therefore not play for the club again.
“Lance has been a valued and integral member of the squad for the last three-and-a-half years and we thank him for his service.
“We wish him and his family well in their life after rugby league with St Helens.
“St Helens will make no further comment on this matter.”
