MINDLESS thieves have stolen the crown off St Helens’ historic Queen Victoria monument.
Deputy council leader Barrie Grunewald has condemned the theft of the bronze crown and appealed for it to be returned.
Coun Grunewald said: “I can’t think why anyone would want to steal it. Perhaps it was the result of a high-spirited night out in the town?
“I hope that whoever took it will return it. After all, what use is it to them.”
The council is now considering what action it can take to restore the crown and make it theft proof.
The statue, which sits in Victoria Square, was unveiled in 1905 before being given a makeover in the late 1990s.
