Snowy start to weekend in St Helens
The borough woke up to a covering of white and snow was falling on Saturday morning.
The Met Office has issued an amber cold weather alert for the weekend.
Forecasters urged residents to keep an eye on family and friends who might be vulnerable to the low temperatures.
However, the steady fall of the white stuff was expected to create difficult driving conditions across the borough on Saturday.
Merseyside Police Road Traffic unit tweeted not to travel unless absolutely necessary after heavy snow and challenging conditions across St Helens, Wirral, Liverpool and Knowsley.
St Helens Council said the maintenance teams were out and about keeping the borough's network of main roads gritted.
Residents were also encouraged to stay safe and keep warm.
The Met Office website suggested the cold spell could last until the start of Tuesday in some parts of England.
