Snow has arrived in the borough.
Some areas of St Helens have been blanketed in snow this morning and it is expected to continue into this afternoon according to the Met Office.
A yellow weather warning for snow and ice remains in place for the North West but the snow is expected to be replaced by sleet and rain as the day goes on.
Residents are being warned to be aware of travel disruption although roads around St Helens seem to be largely unaffected.
Weather warnings are also in place for Northern Ireland, north Wales, northern and western England and Scotland as a frontal system continues to make its way in from the Atlantic.
The greatest snowfall, up to 3.9ins, was forecast to hit the Peak District and the Pennines as daytime temperatures in northern England struggle to reach 4C (39.2F) in Leeds and Manchester.
