Planning chiefs have given the green light to an application for an industrial warehouse to be converted into a waste transfer station.

Neighbouring residents had objected to the proposal to transform the Withins Road site in Haydock.

Officials received numerous letters of objection, with complaints ranging from concerns about the potential environmental impact to worries about noise levels, smells and the volume of traffic.

The scheme, submitted by Jacobs UK Limited, will be used for “the bulking up and transfer of healthcare waste products prior to transportation for incineration, alternative treatment or landfill”.

The firm’s application also states the plan form part of “ongoing plans” to “further expand and improve efficiencies in operations”.

They also say the scheme will provide security for workers currently employed at the site.

Planning officials said they had concerned residents concerns but did not believe the impact of homes would be significant.

Councillors voted six to three in favour of the plan.
