A ROOFTOP protester has come down after a plea from the couple due to get married at St Helens Town Hall.

The man had been on the roof since earlier this morning meaning the wedding which is due to take place later today had to be cancelled.

The protester has caused damage to the town hall roof which is now being assessed to see whether the wedding can go ahead.

Police, who had closed several roads around the town hall, have arrested the protester.

According to reports on social media, he was throwing roof tiles and shouting but no one was injured.

A council spokesman said: “The man who was staging a protest on the roof of St Helens Town Hall has now come down and has been arrested by police.

“An inspection of the town hall roof is due to take place shortly to assess the damage caused during the incident.

“Subject to the inspection, we hope the wedding scheduled to take place in the town hall this afternoon can still take place as planned.

“Central Library remains closed. We would like to thank members of the public for their patience during this incident.”
