Two men have been arrested and charged in connection with a robbery at a St Helens store.

Merseyside Police are investigating an incident in which cash and cigarettes were stolen from McColl’s on Four Acre Lane in Clock Face last October.

Two people are alleged to have entered the shop with their faces covered and armed with what was described as a tree branch.

Thomas Whitfield, 45, was charged with robbery and remanded in custody.

Lee Hathaway, 27, failed to turn up in court after being bailed and was arrested after a warrant was issued. He was also charged with robbery and kept in custody.

Both men are from Netherley.

Hathaway is also accused of five other robbery offences which were committed in Cheshire.

No date has been announced for their next court appearance.
