Detectives have released a CCTV image of five youths they want to talk to in connection with an assault on a father and son.

The two victims, aged 56 and 28, were walking home from St Helens town centre at about 10.15pm on November 30 when they were approached by a gang of youths near the corner of Westfield Street and Kirkland Street.

The duo were then attacked by a gang of about six youths aged between 13 and 16.

It is believed the youths were armed with wooden sticks, possibly tree branches.

The father was struck in the face and suffered a broken nose and facial injuries. He was treated for his injuries by paramedics at the scene.

The youths subsequently made off towards Prescot Road.

CCTV footage shows the youths circling the two men before assaulting them as they crossed Kirkland Street.

Two St Helens youths, aged 14 and 15, have been arrested on suspicion of assault and bailed pending further inquiries.

Police are appealing to anyone who recognises the individuals, or has any information about this incident, to call DC Steve Kellett, of St Helens CID, on 0151 777 6816, or Crimestoppers, in confidence, on 0800 555 111.
