PC Mark Hagan said: “The victim was travelling home with her two pet dogs, after a day in Liverpool with her parents.

“Ten minutes into her journey the victim, a 31-year-old woman from Warrington, noticed a couple sat behind her who were shouting and making lewd comments.

“The couple turned their attention towards the victim in an obvious bid to intimidate her. The woman continued to verbally harass the victim before punching her in the face, after much encouragement from her male companion.

“The man then threatened the victim before the couple left the train at Whiston rail station.”

The victim remained on the train and reported the incident, which took place on Sunday, April 17, to rail staff who alerted police.

PC Hagan added: “This was a nasty attack on the victim, who was left with swelling and bruises around her eye.

“Not only did the victim suffer physical harm, she was also left very shaken and understandably upset by the ordeal.

“I would urge anyone who was travelling on this service at the time who may have witnessed the assault, or who can help identify the people pictured on CCTV, to contact us immediately.”
