COUNCIL chiefs in St Helens are warning residents to be on their guard over door to door salesmen selling cavity wall insulation.
Some of their sales practices have been described as pushy and insistent, and they always stress that government grants are available.
But the council trading standards advise caution in committing to any products or services offered by someone knocking on your door.
Councillor Alison Bacon, the council’s Cabinet Member for Environmental Protection said: “Anyone thinking of having any work done should first get a number of quotes from recommended or established firms. As a general rule do not agree to buy any goods or services from anyone contacting you out of the blue.”
Further free advice when buying goods or services is available from Consumer Direct on 08454 040506. Grants for cavity wall insulation are available in certain circumstances and the Affordable Warmth Unit at St.Helens Council Home Improvement Agency will be able to advise you if you are eligible. The Unit can be contacted on 01744 671611.
