Police have issued a CCTV image of a would-be thief eyeing up an expensive handbag at a shop in St Helens.

The crystal-clear picture was taken seconds before the crook grabbed the bag and bolted for the door of the TK Maxx store on St Helens Retail Park, Warrington New Road.

Moments earlier, the man walked over to the tills and collected a plastic ‘bag for life’. He then walked back to the handbags and selected two Ralph Lauren bags which he placed inside the plastic bag.

He then brazenly strolled out of the store.

Security guards attempted to foil the raid and gave chase, prompting the crook to drop the bags before leaping into a waiting silver Mercedes car.

Officers are keen to speak to the man in the CCTV footage or anyone who may recognise him or saw the silver Mercedes car.

The incident took place at around 1.10pm on Monday, December 21 but police only made public a witness appeal yesterday (Wednesday).

Anyone with any information is asked to contact Merseyside Police on 0151 777 6813 or the confidential Crimestoppers line on 0800 555 111.
