A 18-year-old from Clock Face is fighting for his life in hospital after he was assaulted in the early hours of New Year’s Day.
The teenager was attacked on Jubits Lane, Sutton, close to the corner of Gartons Lane, at around 2am.
He is believed to have been punched and fell to the ground, causing a serious head injury.
The victim was rushed to hospital where his condition is described as critical.
Police are urging witnesses to the assault to come forward and want to speak to a man in his early 40s who may have been close to the scene with a woman and young girl.
Det Chief Insp Sue Coombs said: “We are working hard to establish exactly how the victim came by his injuries and to bring the person or people responsible for the assault to justice.
“We know there were a number of people who were in the area at the time of the incident and we urgently need to speak to them as they may have vital information which could assist with our inquiries.
“One of the people at the scene is described as a white man in his late 30s to early 40s with light coloured hair which is shaved or cropped short.
“He’s thought to have been wearing a white top or t-shirt and dark trousers and may have been with a woman who was wearing a black leather jacket and a young girl dressed in a bright pink coat.
“We also believe the victim was helped by a young male who left the scene before the emergency services arrived. This person is described as around 17-years-old and is thought to have been wearing a black anorak and dark tracksuit bottoms.
“We believe both of these people may have important information and I would appeal to them, or anyone who knows them, to get in touch with us as soon as possible. I would also urge anyone else who witnessed the incident to contact us.”
Witnesses should St Helens CID on 0151 777 6811 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
