Detectives investigating an allegation of rape are appealing for help to find a taxi driver.

Merseyside Police’s Unity team are looking into reports that a 19-year-old woman was assaulted as she slept after a night out in St Helens town centre.

She reported that the incident happened in the early hours of Sunday, June 5 in Prescot.

Police are appealing for information to help with their investigation and are particularly keen to trace a taxi driver.

The driver collected the suspect and the victim from North John Street, in St Helens town centre, at 12.16am on Sunday, June 5.

The taxi was described as being a dark-coloured new-style Hackney, similar to a Peugeot Euro taxi.

Det Con Jay Halpin said: “Despite making extensive enquiries with taxi companies in the area, we are yet to trace the taxi driver.

“We believe he could assist with our investigation and I would ask if that was you, to get in contact via 0151 777 1382 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.”

Kenishka Perera, 47, of Calderwood Park, Netherley, has been charged with 12 offences, including human trafficking, rape, sexual assault and sexual touching.

A trial date has been set for April 3.
