A ST Helens takeaway is celebrating after transforming its premises to rocket up the hygiene ratings.

Hassan Express, in Denton’s Green, went from a one-star rating to the best-possible ranking of five in the space of just three and a half months.

Owner Abdul Khalique oversaw a complete renovation of the Windleshaw Road Indian takeaway after the premises were found to be dirty and untidy by a St Helens Council officer in September.

The staff’s work paid off spectacularly as the local authority returned in mid-December to give Hassan Express its new five-star rating.

Customers have also been noticing the changes, with the squeaky-clean building and new open-plan layout leading to an upsurge in business to start the new year.

Mr Khalique, who has owned Hassan Express for around 12 years, said: “We did everything we were required to do and also did some extra work such as replacing all the grouting on the tiled floor.

“Everything is now up-to-date and new and the council was really happy with it on their last visit to give us the five-star rating. The officers have also been checking up on the work all the way through.

“We started outside and then moved onto the counter and finally sorted the back area out. We’ve also changed the kitchen area so when we are taking orders people can have a look and everything is open to their view.

“A lot of people coming in have said it looks very good and the last few weeks we have been doing very well.”
