Youngsters from eight St Helens schools have taking part in a competition to mark the run-in to the Rio Olympics.
The indoor Road2Rio indoor event at Sutton Leisure Centre saw over 200 pupils from high schools across the borough compete in a wide range of athletic disciplines, including standing long jump, relay races, vertical jump and speed bounce.
Organised by St Helens Council’s Sports Development Team in partnership with Eveque Sports, the event was supported by a host of Sports Leaders from Sutton Academy.
Very closely-matched teams generated an exciting competition.
Rainford High School’s total score from each event won them the Year 7 competition, with Cowley High School runners–up. Rainford also finished first in the Year 8 contest, with De La Salle High School placed second.
Sports Development Officer, Mark Jennings said: “It was great to see so much potential on show, with all participants demonstrating a high level of skill and commitment throughout the day.
“The overall combined scores for the event mean that the top two boys and girls teams from each year group go forward to represent St Helens in the School Games Finals in Halton next month.”
Those teams are:
* Year 7 Boys from Rainford and Hope Academy
* Year 7 Girls from Rainford and Cowley
* Year 8 Boys from Rainford and Cowley
* Year 8 Girls from St Augustine’s and Rainford.
