A major road in St Helens which has been closed since the Boxing Day floods has finally re-opened.

Pasture Lane in Rainford, St Helens, reopened on Wednesday (March 2) to single way traffic, controlled by signals.

The road had to be closed on Boxing Day after floods caused a section of footpath to collapse when the retaining wall, which supports it above Rainford Brook, failed.

Since then the road closure has had to be maintained whilst a gas main has been diverted and site investigation undertaken to help in the design of the replacement wall.

The restricted road opening will be in operation for several months whilst a scheme is finalised and a contractor is selected.

The construction of the new wall will require a further road closure after which it can be fully reopened.
