A GUNMAN sparked panic after opening fire just yards away from a row of houses and two primary schools.
Police were alerted after 999 call-handlers received reports of a shot being blasted along Derbyshire Hill Road last Thursday evening (December 29).
Officers were called to the scene - near to both Holy Spirit and Broad Oak primary schools - at about 7.20pm and subsequently confirmed that a single shot had been fired.
Fortunately, there were no reports of any injuries or any damage caused.
The scene was secured, a search of the area was conducted and house-to-house inquiries began.
An investigation to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident has since been launched in a bid to identify those responsible.
In the meantime, high visibility patrols have been stepped up in the area and local CCTV footage is being examined for clues.
At this early stage of the investigation the motive for the incident remains unknown.
Officers are urging anyone who has information about the incident, or who may have witnessed it, to call the anti-gun crime Matrix team on 0151 777 5699 or Crimestoppers, in confidence, on 0800 555 111.
