A senior cabinet member on St Helens Council has joined calls for Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn to resign.
Seve Gomaz-Aspron took to Twitter on Saturday, hours before the bid to depose Mr Corbyn was sparked by his sacking of Hilary Benn.
He wrote: “I am #Labour I am anti- #austerity but I am also realistic about delivering this in Government. It’s time for @jeremycorbyn to step aside.”
His tweet prompted a fierce debate, with Corbynites demanding he be given more time in the job.
However, there were plenty who agreed with Coun Gomez-Aspron’s assessment that Mr Corbyn’s leadership wiped out Labour’s chance of electoral success.
