A total of five areas across St Helens are to be made into 20mph zones following concerns about pedestrians’ safety.

And council chiefs are now set to host a series of event to publicise the move.

The roads affected by the changes are:

n Burnage Avenue Estate, Bold

n Forest Road area, Bold

n Concourse Way/Berrys Lane area, Parr

n Ridgewood Drive and Ravenstone Drive Estate, Sutton

n Gaskell Street/Ramford Street area, Parr

Coun Andy Bowden, cabinet member for Public Health and Wellbeing, said: “We know from research from around the country that people often feel safer on and around roads where there are traffic calming measures.

“Reducing the speed limit to 20mph in these residential areas and commercial centre routes will provide more opportunities for walking and cycling, increasing levels of physical activity and community engagement.”

St Helens Council’s Public Health and Road Safety Teams, along with Helena Partnership’s Make it Happen Team, are hosting free “Playstreets” events to celebrate the new 20mph zones.

If you’d like to learn more you can find out all you need to know about the new zones and enjoy some free activities at the Playstreets events today between 11.30am and 1.30pm on land between Berrys Lane and Weymouth Avenue, and Thursday between 11.30am and 2.30pm, King George V Playing Fields, Sutton Manor.
