A ST Helens man was hospitalised with head and facial injuries following an unprovoked early hours assault.

The victim, a 21-year-old man, was walking home from the town centre - in the direction of Knowsley Road - when he was set upon by an unknown number of attackers.

The incident occurred between 4am and 5am on Friday May 25.

The victim was taken to Whiston Hospital for treatment and has since been discharged to continue his recovery at home. Anyone with information is asked to call St Helens CID on 0151 777 6061 or Crimestoppers, in confidence, on 0800 555 111.

Meanwhile, police in St Helens have issued a warning to clubbers following an influx of a dangerous new recreational drug. Nicknamed ‘pink ecstasy’, the drug which may be being distributed from Merseyside throughout the country.

The pills are the same size and shape as an ecstasy tablet but are often pink.
