Council chiefs in St Helens are set to sign off a bumper cash injection to boost shopping centres in outlying areas of the town.

Councillors on the authority’s ruling cabinet will vote on Wednesday (today) on a package of improvements for retailers in Newton, Moss Bank, Sutton, Windle and Parr.

If approved, the £500,000 scheme will fund improvements to footways and street lighting, as well as paying for resurfacing work and better disabled access to shops.

The council has already spent around £1.5m on similar improvement works to other retails areas in the borough.

The areas set to benefit are:

g Park Road South, Newton

g Bassenthwaite Avenue, Wythburn Crescent and Dalehead Place, Moss Bank

g Waterdale Place, Sutton

g City Gardens and Hard Lane, Windle

g Chancery Lane, Tickle Avenue, Nunn Street, Ashtons Green Drive and the Horseshoe roundabout, Parr.

Council leader Barrie Grunewald said: “Our network of local shopping centres is essential and provides easily accessible facilities to meet the community’s day to day needs.

“They provide a good focal point for investment in accessible local services such as health centres, small-scale commercial and shopping requirements as well as their community amenities.

Areas which have already benefitted from funding are shopping centres include Sutton Village, Cambridge Road, Rainhill Village, Billinge and Four Acre.
