A RAINFORD resident is looking for volunteers on Saturday, packing shoeboxes for Romania.
Jean Rudin is well-known within Rainford for coordinating the Hands Of Hope Romania Christmas shoebox extravaganza packing shoeboxes for poor and under-privileged children in and around Jibou, Northwest Romania. Last year Jean and her team of helpers packed over 500 boxes for children from babies to teenagers who otherwise would be unlikely to receive a gift.
Jean is secretary for Hands Of Hope Romania which started in 2005. This registered charity works with vulnerable children working extensively with the Roma community in and around Jibou where living conditions are very poor for children and adults alike. Jean has visited Jibou on two occasions and seen for herself some of the very deprived conditions where children grow up. For example, there is no proper sanitation in an area of over a thousand people where water is from a well or a standpipe and there is no sewerage system.
Jean said: “My shock at the circumstances in the Roma community was raw. Their needs are immense. The slums of Mumbai have a parallel to this community. Children appear out of dilapidated hovels into the waste and sewerage of the dirt ways and roads which are their play area. The widows arrive with lined and haggard faces to receive a food parcel. Accidents are frequent. Poverty is abundant poor health and disease is widespread”.
Jean would love it you could either donate items to go in the shoe boxes or come along on the December 8 to help pack the boxes.
Items particularly required are: sweets or chocolate, crisps, biscuits and tee-shirts for girls and boys aged 9-12 years old. If you can either donate any items or come along to help, please contact Jean on 01744 885005.
