THE opening day of a huge festival of sports due to be held in St Helens has been cancelled because of poor weather.

Organisers of the St Helens Schools Sports Festival announced today (Wednesday) they were calling off the event.

It was due to be held at Ruskin Drive on Friday (July 13).

A council spokesman said: “With playing areas already saturated – and more heavy rain due to arrive on Friday - St Helens Council’s Sports Development team has been left with no option but to call off an event in which sports like cricket and rounders featured prominently.

“The schools event formed part of the overall three-day St Helens Sports Festival, showcasing the range of sports available at the Ruskin complex.

“The Saturday and Sunday events – which include rugby and football – will go ahead as planned.”
