Council chiefs have commissioned a curator to develop high quality public art work in Prescot town centre.
Cathy Newbery, Public Art Curator, has been commissioned to create a high quality and stimulating ‘Arts in Public Spaces’ Strategy that will help to creatively animate the town centre through the use of public art, over the next five years.
The strategy will be developed in collaboration with local communities and artists, and will complement other ongoing town centre regeneration projects.
Coun Eddie Connor, Knowsley Council’s cabinet member for Public Health and Wellbeing, said: “Along with other exciting developments planned for Prescot, public art can play a valuable role in highlighting the unique heritage, history and distinctiveness of this fascinating town.
“This work will ensure we have a clear Arts in Public Spaces Strategy so we are ‘ready to go’ and work with partners and funders to commission the type of art that local people want to see, in the locations they would like to see and enjoy it.
“Ultimately we aim to create great art and culture for everyone in Prescot Town Centre.”
Events are being held to capture the views, ideas and aspirations of local people about spaces in the town centre and how they could be used,
different types of and themes for art. There will also be the opportunity
to take part in a creative activity.
People are invited to drop in or book a time to talk to Cathy Newbery or
local artist Sue McHugh on the following days:
Saturday, February 6, 9am to 4pm at the Work in Progress Shop (upstairs in Prescot Shopping Centre)
Wednesday, February 17, 2pm to 4pm and 5 to 7pm at Prescot Town Hall
In March, there will be an exhibition in Prescot Shopping Centre that will bring together all of the ideas and views that people have contributed and people will have an opportunity to comment on the draft Public Art Strategy.
