An investigation into the cause of a huge blaze at a former social club is underway.

Firefighters from St Helens, Eccleston, Whiston and Kirby were all called to an inferno at a former social club near Chancery Lane, Parr, at about 4pm on Thursday (February 27).

Fortunately, the blaze was contained towards the rear of the property on Boardmans Lane as massive plumes of thick black smoke billowed across St Helens.

The main body of the fire was extinguished by 7.20pm but firefighters remained at the scene throughout the night to damp down several other pockets of flames.

A fire service spokeswoman scotched rumours circulating social media that a firefighter had been injured while tackling the blaze.

Station manager Mark Thomas said: “When I was at the scene the roof of the building had collapsed and flames could be seen above the brickwork. We worked with the police to ask residents in the local area to close doors and windows so smoke did not enter any properties. There were large volumes of smoke from the fire.

“Firefighters used hand-controlled hoses and monitors, which can be set up on the ground to put water onto a particular area of a fire, to bring the fire under control. Firefighters worked safely and effectively through the night to tackle this incident.”
